What Is a Geotag?
A geotag is location information embedded inside a photo or video. Most smartphones automatically save latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp into the image's EXIF metadata when location services are enabled.
| Stored Information | Example |

| Longitude | 139.6917 |
| Altitude | 42 m |
| Date | Jul 6, 2026 |

How Does Geotagging Work?
- 1
Take Photo
You capture a photo with your smartphone or GPS-enabled camera.
- 2
Phone Gets GPS Coordinates
The device reads your current latitude, longitude, and altitude from GPS satellites.
- 3
Coordinates Written to EXIF
Location data is saved into the image's EXIF metadata alongside the photo file.
- 4
Photo Contains a Geotag
The image now includes embedded GPS coordinates that can be read by compatible software.
Geotagging is automatic on most smartphones when camera location permission is enabled.
What Information Does a Geotag Contain?
- Latitude
- Longitude
- Altitude

Why Some Photos Don't Have a Geotag?
Location Permission Disabled
Camera or location services were turned off when the photo was taken.
Downloaded from Social Media
Platforms like Instagram and Facebook often strip GPS metadata on upload.
Screenshot
Screenshots do not capture GPS coordinates from the original scene.
Image Edited
Some editing apps remove or overwrite EXIF metadata during export.
Metadata Removed
Privacy tools and sharing apps may deliberately delete location data.
Camera Doesn't Support GPS
Older cameras and some DSLR models do not record location information.
Can You Find a Photo's Location Without a Geotag?
Yes. Even if GPS metadata has been removed, AI can estimate where a photo was taken by analyzing visual information such as landmarks, architecture, road signs, vegetation, terrain, and other geographic clues.
AI analyzes:
- Buildings
- Mountains
- Languages
